All you'd want to know about Saturday Night Live's most talented filmmaker, and the story behind his unseen feature-length masterpiece Nothing Lasts Forever. Tom Schiller, the son of famed I Love Lucy writer Bob Schiller, began his career as a documentary filmmaker, first working as an assistant to Robert Snyder, and later making a short documentary about his mentor, Henry Miller. Schiller was among the first to join the crew of Saturday Night Live and witnessed firsthand its meteoric rise to becoming a late night staple. Schiller's most famous contribution was the first Samurai sketch starring John Belushi, although he later focused his attention on his true passion: filmmaking. His most famous short was the ironic black-and-white film Don't Look Back in Anger, which featured John Belushi, age 90, dancing over the graves of his SNL cast members. Schiller made over a dozen short films for the show between 1977 and 1980, when he left the show to pursue a feature filmmaking career. Lorne Michaels produced his first film, which was to feature Schiller's SNL-friends Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi and Bill Murray in supporting parts. Sadly, Belushi passed away shortly before production began, and despite supporting roles by Aykroyd and Murray and Gremlins-star Zach Galligan in the lead, the part-color, part-black-and-white film was too off-beat for MGM's tastes. The studio refused to release it.
Schiller returned to SNL in 1988, and over the next six years made dozens of other hilarious but often touching short films. The highly-anecdotal Nothing Lost Forever: The Films of Tom Schiller covers everything from Schiller's childhood home movies, to his documentary about Henry Miller, to all of his SNL shorts (both aired and unaired), to his current work as a television commercial director.
